Penny Pitch 2011
On Saturday June 18th, Kane’s Restaurant, KNCO and the United Way of Nevada County came together again for their fourth annual Penny Pitch event. This year’s event was very successful with more people participating than in the past three years. The competition began at 1pm and continued throughout the afternoon with over 175 players pitching pennies. Teams such as the “The One Cent Wonders”, “The Red Hot Chill Peppers”, “Chuck’s Angels” and “The Sons of Pitches” all came out to show their skill at the fine art of pitching pennies.
Penny pitching involves tossing a penny as close to a wall as you can. The Penny Pitch has become an annual event here in Nevada County. The event was brought here from the Bay Area were they have been pitching pennies to raise money for charity for over 30 years. There are strict rules in penny pitching such as a “leaner” beats a penny that is touching the wall and pitchers must have both feet behind the curve while pitching. During this Saturday’s Penny Pitch, there was live music played by Uncle Eddie’s Band, great raffle prizes won and great food served up by Kane’s.
The winners of the 4th annual Penny Pitch were announced that afternoon. The “Kiwanis Team” took first place and John "Zadock" Kruesi was the winning player. “Kane Nation” took second place, “Chuck’s Angels” took third place, and “The Shock Top Tossers” came in fourth. Even though it is a competitive event everyone had a fun and enjoyable time pitching pennies for a good cause. “We had more sponsors and teams come out this year; this is a great way to have fun and to help give back to the community” said Megan Timpany, Executive Director of United Way. The event raised $5500, with more donations from the event expected. All the proceeds from this event will go to United Way of Nevada County and its 20 partner agencies.
A special thank you goes out to these fine sponsors.
