Letter from United Way of Neveda County's new Executive Director, Megan Timpany

This has been a very busy and exciting time at United Way of Nevada County.  We are currently in the process of recruiting board members and it looks like we have some wonderful new potential board members starting to appear.  The Board of Directors of United Way of Nevada County are a devoted group of people who are constantly volunteering their time to help make Nevada County an even better place to live.

Partner allocation and reviews are also in progress.  UWNC has many fantastic partners, and as a new executive director it has been a joy getting to know about these agencies.  This year we have asked our agencies for success stories.  We will be sharing these with you throughout the year.  Please take time to read the stories featured in our next newsletter.  After reading the success stories you’ll begin to understand the great accomplishments our partner agencies are making and what YOUR United Way Dollars are helping to support.

The campaign is starting to be ushered in with some new designs and presentation materials.  "Give. Advocate. Volunteer. Live United" is part of the new campaign theme.  The campaign committee is currently planning for the upcoming 2008 campaign.  If your business or place of employment isn’t already involved, let us know and we’ll be sure to include them in our next campaign.  Just think, if everyone in your workplace gave $5.00 a pay check to United Way… what a difference it could make in our community!

I have only been executive director here at UWNC for a short time but I have learned a lot about this community and what a great asset United Way has been for the last 25 years. With your help, I know we will continue to have a positive impact on our community!

With all this wonderful activity happening it is also important that we remember that more than ever, United Way of Nevada County needs your funds to continue to help this community thrive.  This year with the downward swing in the economy, it is even more important that we continue to give back to our community in any way that we can.  As our new logo states: Give. Advocate. Volunteer…Live United!

UNITED WAY ADDS NEW AGENCIES FOR 2008

United Way of Nevada County added three new partner agencies this year, bringing the total number of Nevada County partner agencies to 19. The new partner agencies are: Gold Country Community Council, formerly the Senior Center and the agency that coordinates the Meals on Wheels program; RSVP/Helpline and Sierra Family Medical Clinic in North San Juan.

Prior to be accepted as a partner agency, each organization undergoes a review process conducted by a United Way Citizen Review Team. Each Citizen Review Team is made up of volunteers who evaluate a prospective agency's financial statements and programs. As a United Way partner agency, these nonprofits are now eligible to apply for grants from United Way's Community Investment Fund. "This fund is the only community fund that raises money FROM the community to GIVE BACK to the community in the form of grants. United Way's Community Investment Fund helps our partner agencies focus on providing services in our community rather than spending precious resources fundraising," explains Larry Hartshorn, Board president of United Way of Nevada County.

This year, the Community Investment Fund distributed $114,000 to 15 partner agencies. "Not all agencies apply for additional grant funds," explains Lindy Beatie, United Way's Campaign Coordinator. "In addition to the grants, partner agencies also receive funds from payroll deductions designated to their agency, which can range anywhere from $100 to $1,000 annually."

The kick off for the 2008 campaign will be September 18th at the Holiday Inn Express/Gold Miners Inn. The mission of United Way of Nevada County is to improve lives by directing community resources to community needs.

UNITED WAY OF NEVADA COUNTY ANNOUNCES

New IRA Legislation helps seniors donate more to Nonprofits

The new Pension Protection Act of 2006 allows persons age 70 ½ or older an opportunity to make distributions directly from their IRA to one or more charities without the distribution being included in taxable income and subject to withholding. Another benefit of the new legislation is that the funds transferred from the IRA to a charity count towards the mandatory withdrawal.
