Frequently Asked Questions

What will United Way of Nevada County do with the money raised?

United Way of Nevada County raises money for nineteen agencies that deliver services in the eight highest priority areas this community has identified (as surveyed in the Community Assessment Project 2001). These areas are:

AFFORDABLE HOUSING, EDUCATIONAL/VOCATIONAL TRAINING, WAGES & WORK OPPORTUNITIES, SOCIAL/RECREATIONAL PROGRAMS, FAMILY VIOLENCE, HEALTH SERVICES AVAILABILITY, TRANSPORTATION, AND SUBSTANCE ABUSE.

Chances are that some of your employees have benefited either directly or indirectly from one or more of the programs provided by one of our agencies. They may receive daycare assistance from Sierra Children's Services, or may have called Helpline to find services for a neighbor in need.

Does the money stay in this community?

Absolutely!  The only money that leaves our county is the money your employees designate to a non-profit outside the community. United Way of Nevada County pays approximately $100 a month to United Way of America for their services. But, all the money raised in Nevada County STAYS in Nevada County.

How many employees does United Way of Nevada County have?

United Way of Nevada County has 1 full time Executive Director, Megan Timpany, and up to two part time staff members working 12 & 15 hours per week. We rely heavily on volunteers to ccomplish our mission. Volunteers put in countless hours as our Board of Directors, committees served on, community Citizens Review Teams of our member agencies, planning events and general office work.

What has United Way of Nevada County accomplished?

Last year United Way of Nevada County provided $120,000 to member agencies and $13,000 to non-profits specifically designated by donors.

How does United Way of Nevada County allocate money raised?

Citizen Review Teams (CRT) visit each of the nineteen member agencies. Each team of four people meet with the Executive Director and key staff to review their application for funds. The application includes financial statements, program objectives and outcomes, financial reports, fundraising sources, agency management, agency fiscal management and effective delivery of services which meet identified community needs. Each CRT then makes recommendation on how much to allocate each agency visited.

Why now?

Our agencies put the majority of their dollars to work providing much needed services. We work in partnership with our agencies to provide for them the much-needed efficiency of a workplace campaign so they can continue to do their work.

United Way of Nevada County is in a position to provide leadership and collaboration around the big issues and concerns of our community. We are taking this leadership role on in the area of substance abuse and the huge circle of victims this problem creates: seniors raising grandchildren, families without enough to eat due to a bread winner's unemployment, children without proper care or homes and an opportunity to rehabilitate for those willing to be contributing members of our community again.
